Mies van der Rohe was a modernist architect who famously said “Less is more.” He also built some of the most iconic buildings in Chicago, such as the Federal Building and 860 N. Lakeshore Dr. So what does any of this have to do with “Stranger Than Fiction”?
One, the film shot on location in Chicago so I got to spend a few months there. I’m a huge Mies van der Rohe fan so I was also able to see many of his buildings in person. More importantly, I worked every day with Director Marc Forster and VFX Supervisor Kevin Haug on some of the stranger moments in “Stranger Than Fiction”. While Mies is famous for his “less is more” ideal, I’ll argue that sometimes smaller is better. It’s not often that you get to work day after day with the core group of creative decision makers. This was one of those opportunities. We came up with some funky ideas. Crash zooms from outer space. Building demolitions. Visual manifestations of Harold Crick’s obsession with numbers. What a fun place to be! What a great team to work with! What a fun project to work on!
